I do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.*** "Kniffel is a typical party game played in the German speaking countries. It can be played by two or more people, but it is usually restricted to one person per group. In the beginning the rules are very simple: just adding a new card to the pile where you have already been drawing from." The oldest known version of Kniffel was published in 1866 by an author whose name is unknown and who did not use a title nor make any mention of his work even though it was published and distributed widely at that time. The first title of the book published with this version was "Die Kniffel-Karten" by "Carl Friedrich Lenhard GmbH, Scheidt und Bachmann, Berlin". In 1867 there were at least 18 versions of Kniffel published. In 1875, a company from Chemnitz published a bestseller called „Kinderknoten“ (Children’s Knots). The book had five hundred pages, and it contained a whole range of children’s games – not just Kniffel – and it sold two thousand copies. In the 1870s and 80s there were no fewer than ten different versions of Kniffel published in Germany within twelve years. Kniffel spread throughout Germany and was soon played in other countries such as the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. In the ‘Preußische Staats- und Universitäts-Zeitung’ (Prussian State and University Newspaper) from 1872, you can already find a short description of the game: “Kniffel is a card game widely spread in Germany which may be played by two or more players…” Today there are many versions of Kniffel that differ from each other by their own special rules or features. Usually, you can play Kniffel with a standard deck of 52 cards. However, there are many Kniffel variants that require a different amount of cards. In the beginning the rules were simple: just add a new card to the pile where you have been drawing from. In those days, it was common for the card values to have different values depending on your position relative to where they were drawn from. For example, an ace might be worth one point if it was drawn first, three points if it was drawn second and five points if it was drawn last. cfa1e77820
